Lenten Choral Evensong

According to The Book of Common Prayer, 1662
Join us for a reverent and prayerful Lenten Choral Evensong sung in the timeless tradition of The Book of Common Prayer (1662), offered by the Pohick Choir & Pohick Youth Choir and commemorates St. Cyril of Jerusalem, March 18.

This sacred service of scripture, psalmody, and song invites us into the quiet reflection of the Lenten season through some of the most beloved treasures of the Anglican choral tradition.

The evening begins with organ voluntaries including Herbert Howells’ Psalm-Prelude on Psalm 37:11 and Gerald Near’s lyrical setting of Ar hyd y nos. The choir will offer Samuel Sebastian Wesley’s penitential Introit Wash me throughly, followed by the noble Preces & Responses of Thomas Tallis.

Psalm 29 will be sung to a chant by John Davy and Psalm 121 with a chant by Walford Davies, leading into the Office Hymn, God, that madest earth and heaven - Ar hyd y nos. The canticles are drawn from Charles Villiers Stanford’s majestic Evening Service in C, and the Anthem, Herbert Howells’ deeply expressive Like as the hart, beautifully captures the soul’s longing for God.

The service concludes with the stirring hymn, All my hope on God is founded - Michael, sending us forth grounded in faith and hope.

Come and enter into the beauty of sung prayer, ancient words, and sacred music as we journey together through Lent.
