Wisdom of the Desert Fathers and Mothers for Troubling Times:
A five-week journey into Desert Spirituality
Facilitator: Dr. Marleen McCabe
“For God Alone my soul in silence waits (psalm 62:1).”
In the desert landscapes of Egypt, Syria, Palestine, and Arabia, during the third to sixth centuries, a profound spiritual movement was unfolding. Men and women withdrew into the wilderness to devote themselves to prayer, inner stillness, and honest self-examination. Their purpose was to cultivate a deliberate, attentive awareness of God’s presence.
The Desert Fathers and Mothers— Abbas and Ammas whose wisdom still burns like embers— teach that the soul deepens in silence, that perseverance is a kind of prayer, and that courage is simply staying present to one’s own inner landscape even when the world around feels harsh, uncertain, or undone.
In their footsteps we learn: the desert is not a place of emptiness, but a place where the heart finally hears itself speak.
