David Leahey, Music Minister

David Leahey began his musical career as a chorister at Liverpool Cathedral, England. During that time, he gained a rich choral education, and participated in services for Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth 11, HRH Princess Diana, and Prime Ministers Margaret Thatcher and John Major. David also toured Spain and Japan alongside Paul McCartney, performing McCartney’s Liverpool Oratorio. While still a teenager, he became organist for a number of churches in Liverpool and its surrounding areas. At age sixteen, he was appointed as Organ Scholar at Liverpool Cathedral under the tutelage of world¬≠ renowned Professor Doctor Ian Tracey, and in this capacity accompanied and conducted services and assisted in the training of probationer choristers.

In 1997, David followed in the footsteps of Gustav Holst, Ralph Vaughan Williams, and Herbert Howells and was awarded he foundation scholarship at the Royal College of Music in London, England. Following his time in London, David returned to Liverpool and obtained a Bachelor of Arts degree in Music as well as a Bachelor of Science in Information Technology.

Since August 2003, David has been the Director of Music at two high profile churches in the D.C. Metropolitan area and is currently the Director of Music at Christ Church Parish, Pensacola, Florida. During his time in the United States, David has worked with George Mason University and demonstrated his excellent repertoire by performing recitals at the White House, the Blair House, and Washington’s National Cathedral, among other prominent venues throughout the country. In addition to these honors, David has lectured at numerous American Guild of Organist Association and American Choral Directors Association conferences nationwide.

Also an able composer, David was commissioned by the North Carolina Chamber Music Festival in the spring of 2015 to compose an orchestral piece in honor of Christ Church, New Bern’s 300th anniversary celebration. This selection was performed by the Chamber Orchestra at a musical gala event.

David was appointed Director of Music at Christ Church Parish, Pensacola in July 2017. Bringing with him a rich background of Anglican choral tradition, David has introduced a varied repertoire to the Parish Choir, which is demonstrated during weekly worship as well as special services such as Evensong, a Festival of Lessons and Carols, and Passiontide Recitals .

David and his family have recently moved back with his family to the DC metro area, where his wife is attending Virginia Theological Seminary in Alexandria.

In addition to David’s musical contributions to the church, he has also designed websites, built databases and office networks, developed the church exchange server, and produced parish’s weekly and monthly written publications.
