Coming forty days before Easter (not counting Sundays), Ash Wednesday marks the start of the season of Lent, a special period of devotion where Christians journey with Jesus towards Jerusalem. There, he would give up his life on Good Friday as a sacrifice for the sins of the world before rising from the grave on Easter morn.
At Ash Wednesday services, Christians corporately confess their sins and optionally come forward to receive ashes on their foreheads in the form of a cross. These serve not only as a mark of repentance, as but also as a response to Christ's call for his disciples to take up their crosses and follow him. In the forty days that follow, many Christians take on special disciplines, such as attending studies to deepen their faith or setting aside time for daily prayers or service to others. To help with these, Pohick holds special dinners, studies, and services on the five following Wednesdays from 6:30 - 8:30 pm.
Because Ash Wednesday is a workday for many, Pohick offers services throughout the day to accommodate worshipers' schedules: at 7 am before work, noon at lunch time, 4:30 pm after school, and 7:30 pm for those unable to attend during the day. We welcome not just parishioners, but other members of the community to attend this special service and the five Wedsnesday evening gatherings that follow.
